YOUR CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT
3 TO 5 YEARS
You will find now that your child is enthralled by the world around them and very interested in new things. This is when the ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’ and ‘why’ questionning starts. Mainly the WHY, WHY, WHY. They should be enjoying time with friends learning new rules. This may be the time they start to form real bonds with friends and play together not alongside.
How you can encourage your child’s learning and develpoment
- Lots of outdoors this is the best teacher
- Get creative with where you go farms, funparks, museum, aquarium, library
- Lots of messy craft
- get them involved in everyday activities and ask for their help
- always try and find time to answer their questions and pay attention when they are inquisative
- Celebrate thier wins with them
AREAS OF CHANGE TO PAY ATTENTION TO
Physical
- Can get dressed and undressed most of the time
- jumps and runs with ease
- uses steps correctly
- can maybe skip now
- attempts to catch ball with hands
- much more agile and confident on playgrounds
- holds crayon/pencil etc. between thumb and first two fingers
- will nomtice hand dominance
- attempt to draw shapes or be aware of what they are
- can use scissors safely
- can use the toilet on their own
- feeds self well without many accidents
- might begin night time toilet routine
Social
- gets great enjoyment playing with other children
- maybe a best friend
- can cooperate with peers most of the time
- developing independence and social skills they use for developemnt and school
Emotional
- comforts others when hurt
- can show anger towards peers as they have a clear mind on what they want
- Lots of love and affection required
- really offer praise and sel-esteem building discussions
Language
- speaks using lots of different words
- tells stories – sometimes made up (well often)
- talks very regularly
- may make up funny new words
- mimic adult form of speech
- will have confdience to join in coversations
- loves jokes and tricks
- can be more assertive using words
